The Acoustical Society of India (ASI) is the nation's multidisciplinary professional society for acoustics, dedicated to promoting the study and understanding of acoustics in India. The decision to bring together scientists working in every field of acoustics under one umbrella — and to publish a scientific journal devoted to the discipline — was taken at a symposium on “Acoustics in Education” organised at Andhra University, Waltair, in January 1971.
On 31 July 1971 the Society was established and registered at Visakhapatnam, with Prof. S. Bhagavantam as the Convenor, Prof. B. Ramachandra Rao as the Secretary and ten other leading acousticians of the country as ad-hoc committee members.
“The advancement of science and technology of all branches of acoustics and the maintenance of high standards in such science and technology; to increase and diffuse the knowledge of acoustics and promote its practical application.”
— Society objectives as published in the Memorandum of Association and Rules & Regulations, JASI Vol. 1, No. 1, January 1973.
The Society pursues these objectives by publishing a professional journal, periodic newsletters, status reports; by organising conferences, symposia and seminars across every branch of acoustics; by cooperating with allied societies in India and abroad; and by representing acoustical interests at national and international levels. ASI is an active member of the International Commission for Acoustics (ICA), which is associated with the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP).
